The North American Indian
I considered both the land and the image when designing the binding for The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis. Four images of landscapes are used on edge decorations and the resist-dyed calf skin covering the book. These images display the awesome scale of nature compared to a rather insignificant human size while depicting the great respect for land shown by Native Americans. The “image” may be seen from many perspectives and I included the traditional pictograms used at the beginning of each of Curtis’s twenty volumes on the endsheets to highlight the diversity of viewpoints. The fair calf suede doubleures cap the photo filled textblock and give a natural texture to augment the natural images within. |
